Recursive institutions and parties. Adopting and mobilizing participatory frameworks in political organizations.

Avatar: Diego Arredondo Diego Arredondo

Description:

Learning how to design, connect and mobilize digital tool usage in democratic organizations and institutions, such as political parties, entails translating existing normative frameworks that already guide them and, additionally, seizing opportunities to keep working on them to move forward.

These frameworks, in the context of democratic institutions, already rely on a base of consensus and juridical bindings that sustain their internal wiring and guide how they can reach out to local communities.

Adopting participatory tools, such as Decidim, inside a particular democratic framework implies a complex endeavor for political institutions, that puts forward a closer examination of how an organization's internal structure and flow are currently built and how they could be improved.

This workshop proposes a collaborative revision, discussion and ideation of strategies to implement participatory infrastructures within democratic institutions and organizations using Decidim, with a special focus on political parties.

This session aims to open discussions and explore alternatives relative to:

Sharing experiences on how to translate normative, institutional and community-driven frameworks to Decidim spaces and components and keep iterating them through online-offline participatory processes.

Designing and offering incentives for participation, broadly, in an era of polarization and sudden turns towards individualization ushered by the pandemic, and particularly, in certain contexts of unfamiliarity with digital interaction beyond social media-driven conversations and limited access to technology.

Learning how to accelerate and multiply the adoption of participatory frameworks, from locally-oriented and tangible use cases.

Prototyping collaboratively possible iterations of how Decidim and its components, spaces and processes can translate democratic frameworks into participatory systems within existing or WIP implementations from different organization templates.

Proposed structure:

  • 5min. Introduction and presentations
  • 45min: Open discussion (3 rounds of 1 minute responses to key questions)
  • 30min: Choosing and prototyping possible iterations on current Decidim implementations.
  • Proposals on paper, Decidim components or digital mockup (*Figma template with main Decidim components provided)
  • 10min: Final presentations and discussion

Maximum number of participants: 20-25

Number of people facilitating the workshop: 2-4

Language of the workshop: Spanish and/or English

Logistical needs: Projector, microphone/speaker, whiteboard, markers, post-its, chairs, 2-3 tables.
