Changes at "Networks in the Age of Platform Capitalism"

En su libro "Tristes por diseño" (2019) distingue tres fases: la era de los medios, las redes y las plataformas. En esta conferencia profundiza en las redes descentralizadas frente a las plataformas centralizadas. Hay alternativas como DuckDuckGo, Telegrama y Signal, pero la gran mayoría de los usuarios están atascados en la plataforma y no saben cómo dejar atrás Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc. Las redes comunitarias independientes han desaparecido prácticamente y casi se han vuelto subversivas (de nuevo) a favor de grandes mundos cerrados de plataformas. ¿Es el concepto de "redes organizadas" que introduje junto con Ned Rossiter una alternativa? ¿Las redes offline prosperarán en respuesta a la creciente hegemonía de las plataformas? ¿Cómo tenemos que abrazar el amor socialista con plataformas centralizadas? ¿Aumentaremos o reduciremos, podemos tomar el poder y desmantelarlo al mismo tiempo?

In my book Sad by Design (2019) I distinguish three phases: the age of media, networks and platforms. In this lecture I go deeper into decentralized networks vs. centralized platforms. There are alternatives such as DuckDuckGo, Telegram and Signal but the vast majority of users are stuck on the platform and do not know how to leave behind Facebook, Google, Twitter etc. Independent community networks have virtually disappeared and have almost become subversive (again) in favour of large, closed worlds of platforms. Is the ‘organized networks’ concept that I introduced together with Ned Rossiter an alternative? Will offline networks thrive in response to the rising platform hegemony? How we need to embrace the socialist love affair with centralized platforms? Will we scale up or down, Can we take power and dismantle power at the same time?
