Move homepage settings to Homepage section

Accepted / In progress

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

We get a few questions from each city related to where they can change some elements of the homepage which are not in the homepage section.

Some examples:

  • Hero image's CTA button text and link are in Appearance;
  • Sub hero banner's text is named Description in Appearance;
  • Highlighted content banner is in Appearance.

Describe the solution you'd like

Let's move all these settings to the Homepage section in their respective items!

As a bonus, the following could be made customisable as they are not really useful in their existing static state. We usually disable them.

  • How to participate
  • Footer sub hero banner

Additional context

See the attached images for an idea of how that would look like. Since it only involves moving settings around, detailed mockups are probably not needed.

Got a lot of questions around that too.

In favor

I agree that this should be changed, it's there only for legacy reasons.
All of these settings belong to "Homepage", and it should be consistent with the rest of configurations there.

@andres is already implementing some of these changes.

Hi @carol, would it be possible to get your review on these improvements? @andres created a draft to solve the first point (hero image and CTA) and I would like to know if it would be possible to move the rest progressively, as separate PRs.

Hi @pierre, I agree these changes improve the current functioning, so go ahead with the PRs!

As a bonus, the following could be made customisable as they are not really useful in their existing static state. We usually disable them.
- How to participate
- Footer sub hero banner

Do you plan to make these two blocks customisable finally?

Thanks, that was quick! I get many requests regarding the Footer sub hero banner, we always solve it with Mainio's module Term Customizer but it seems quite straightforward to implement.

Regarding the block How to participate, I can't find of a single obvious way to do it so I'll wait for you to suggest it. In the meantime, we're simply deactivating it.

Sub hero banner's text is named Description in Appearance

Mind that this is also used by the description meta tag... I had doubts moving this field to this content block

Yes, thanks for pointing it out. @carol, what do you think would be the best approach?

Today, the same text is used for the homepage and the meta tag, moving the field wouldn't change that.

I suggest moving the field to the content block and adding a little notice under it mentioning that it's also used as a description for meta tags. It might be harder to find for the few (0?) users wanting to edit meta but it'll be easier for all the others struggling to edit the homepage.

In the future, they could be different although I think that's a very niche need.
