A mobile app for Decidim

Avatar: Virgile Deville Virgile Deville

Would need an extensive API coverage. Could be interesting to follow the Rocket.Chat model where one downloads only one app and connects to a decidim instance by specifying a url.

You might want to endorse my proposal. I intent to complete the API:

Done!
Also would be nice if people endorse the initiative to complete de Documentation https://meta.decidim.org/initiatives/i-74, this is also related to the API, and even help to keep the app well documented.

In favor

I am very much in favor of the mobile app. I've also wondered why the "Mobile App" has been in the 2017/2018 roadmap but I haven't seen any discussions or issues relating to that:
https://docs.decidim.org/features/en/general-features/

Some cities have asked whether this is possible and it seems to be a major issue for them to put their trust in the platform (where commercial options exist that provide a mobile app). Especially with the younger generation, that seems to be the go-to user interface for using any digital systems.

Another thing I've discussed with some cities is the branding side of the app. Obviously, most people won't know the "Decidim" brand in advance but they know the city's name and can search the app store with the city's name. Therefore, it may be necessary to release city-specific apps for some cities. That would help also with consistent visual style between the web platform and the app.

Some cities may even require that the visual style would need to follow their own brand guidelines. So it would be great in case the application's foundations were developed as a library in a way similar to the core Decidim platform that it would allow:

a) The Decidim's "main" application to utilize it.
AND
b) Allow the development of custom applications on top of it.

We've also heard about a case story of a Finnish city (~50k inhabitants) where they tried a web platform many years ago but could not get anyone to use it. Now they released their own application last year which has received over 2000 downloads.

+1 for city-specific apps, I think it's a must. For instance, people will search for "Helsinki", and they don't know what's Decidim (nor they should).

Hey everyone, FYI, I'm posting here my answer to @ahu via mail about the APP:

"We had indeed planned the development of an app for Decidim in roadmap 2018, but due to the scope of the contract and the large amount of features that had to be done we haven't had time to address the app.

So unfortunately we have to postpone the development of a mobile app until we have funding for it. In any case our goal for this year is to stabilize the software (clear all bugs) and improve usability and accessibility.

We are waiting for Barcelona City Council to publish the contracts it will carry out in 2019 to update the roadmap accordingly."

I think it's a really important project itself, although it could be very expensive.
First I think that we need to think on what features do we want:
* Being able to find on the App Stores
* Multi platform (Android / iOS at least)
* With notifications
* With geolocation
* Offline caching? (not so sure about this one)
It all depends on which model we follow.
AFAIK there are 3 models for making an app:
* Native: really expensive, non multi platform, could slow the development process, could bring some inconsistencies between the app and the web site. It depends a lot on having a really fully working GraphQL API.
* Hybrid: using Ionic / Cordova. It requires to learn a new pipeline.
* Progressive Web App: they already supports most of the features, although I'm not so sure about how much iOS support these kind of apps have.
Maybe we could start some collaborative space to start discussing it more on detail?

Being able to find on the F-Droid store also ... please

From my point of view, why have native/hibryd Apps when we there is Progressive Web Apps technology that solves all the before mentioned points? So we're for a Progressive Web App.
The current web application is already responsive then it is a matter of adding:
- a manifest to declare the site as a progressive web app
- push notification support

Afak it won't be possible to find the app in any market but I don't find it necessary with this solution.

There's a limited interest in developing a mobile app that wouldn't be available on any store.

Yes but the value of the app is facilitating acces to Decidim instances from mobile devices or having it in App markets?
The idea is that when the user accesses the site from a mobile device, it already installs the direct access button in the mobile device.

I didn't you could do that. Do you have an example you could point me too ? Do you have any stats regarding adoption of users to this type of shortcuts ? Is it even possible to do it on apple devices ?

I would propose to do a mini hackathon to explore the before-mentioned alternative of making Decidim a progressive webapp.
We could plan a one day offline session at the beginning of next year for example. Does anyone have experience with progressive webapps?

@virgile_deville We can talk about an online (I meant online not offline) session on the first quarter of 2020, what do you think?

@product I was just on the phone with a client who was asking about it. I remember being part of the roadmap 1 or 2 years ago. My guess is that it unprioritized because there is a revamp of the UI ongoing and the mobile will come afterwards. I'm guessing right ?

@virgile_deville we're preparing the contract, it is planned to start the development in the last quarter of this year.

I have some experience with turbo native and I think that could be an efficient solution to create a native app for iOS and Android.

Hi, I made a comment recently that was deleted today. I mentioned the Ruby on Rails feature "Turbo native" as a possible solution for native Decidim apps. I wonder why my comment was deleted.
