Configure an entry page for each process

Avatar: Katja Henttonen Katja Henttonen

One should be able to configure an entry tab (main page) for each process and this should change according to process phase. Now users are always directed to the process tab when they click "participate" on a process card. This forces users to move themselves to another tab such as "proposals" or "budjeting" before they can do anything. This can sometimes make sense (for instructions) but often it is just an annoying extra click and a usability hazard (since surprisingly many people do not figure instinctively out how to use tabs). The entry tab should be configurable and easy to change when process enters a new phase. For example, when the budgeting phase is running, its should be possible to make users go to the budgeting tab directly when they click 'participate' (instead of forcing a visit to the process main page and an extra click from there).

We have heard similar feedback from actual end users as well and in a usability study we conducted recently, this was one of the issues that the users seemed to struggle with, even when there was clear links added to the process description.

Those users that had enough attention to actually read the text seemed to find to the tab easily but many users didn't seem to give much attention to the description text in general, so the description should be short and clear. Other thing we noticed is that the naming of the tabs is extremely important as well, e.g. when using action verbs such as "Vote" (instead of "Voting), "Leave an idea" (instead of "Ideas"), etc. people seemed to find there more easily.

There have been also other needs that we have heard regarding configuring the process navigation that I have collected to this proposal:
Possibility to configure the participatory space navigation

Yes, I agree. Many users do not read instructions. It is expected for a user interface to be intuitive enough so that users can figure out to perform a simple task, e.g. cast a vote, without much reading. While it is indeed useful to name tabs with actions verbs, as suggested by @ahu, this does not elimate the main issue of having to find a tab and make an extra click. Further, we have noticed that if we name a tab in such a manner (e.g. "Leave an idea") then some people do not figure out that they can browse other people's ideas by scrolling down the same page.
