Unlink Decidim hashtags from Twitter

Avatar: Simonas Zilinskas Simonas Zilinskas

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Currently, Decidim uses hashtags that redirect users towards Twitter. This is problematic because:

  • Twitter is currently facing challenges and its future is uncertain.
  • Decidim should not be tied to a specific social network without offering flexibility or alternative options to its users.

Describe the solution you'd like

Configuration Flexibility: Allow administrators to configure hashtag redirections from the back office. This would mean that administrators can choose where to redirect users when they click on a hashtag, be it Twitter or another social network: in the BO the admin could configure how the query would work or choose from an existing list of social networks.

If it is not fully configurable, we could also consider:

  • Offering a list of popular social networks from which administrators can choose for hashtag redirection.
  • Integrating with an open-source, decentralized social network as a default option, while still allowing for customization.

Describe alternatives you've considered

If we want to go further, we could develop an internal Decidim hashtag system, which operates in tandem with the existing category system. This would facilitate better organization of content and discussions within Decidim, and remove the dependency on external platforms.

Additional context

Does this issue could impact on users private data?
No. The proposed changes focus on the functionality of hashtags and where they redirect. It does not involve the processing or handling of users' private data.

Funded by

No certain funding, but some clients might be interested. We are very open for co-financing of such a change.
