The Internet, as we know it today, was built in part thanks to the development of open code, protocols, and infrastructures that allowed all the nodes of this network to communicate in an open and distributed manner. This necessary but not sufficient condition sustains the Internet today, even though many proprietary codes, closed protocols and highly centralized structures have been built on top of its foundations. Thinking about the sustainability of the Internet today implies facing the challenge of guaranteeing the free, open and democratic nature of the Internet and everything that is part of it. What is the importance of free software for a free Internet? How can these projects be sustained in the medium term? What role should public authorities play in the development of democratic technologies?

Internet, tal y como la conocemos hoy, se construyó en parte gracias al desarrollo de código, protocolos, e infraestructuras abiertas que permitían que todos los nodos de esta red se comunicaran de manera abierta y distribuida. Esta condición necesaria pero no suficiente, sostiene hoy internet; aunque encima de sus fundamentos se hayan construido numerosos códigos privativos, protocolos cerrados y estructuras fuertemente centralizadas. Pensar la sostenibilidad de Internet implica hoy afrontar el reto de garantizar la naturaleza, libre, abierta y democrática de Internet y todo lo que forma parte de ella. ¿Cuál es la importancia del software libre para una Internet libre? ¿Cómo se sostienen estos proyectos a medio plazo? ¿Qué rol deben jugar los poderes públicos en el desarrollo de tecnologías democráticas?.
