Artificial Intelligence (AI) is woven into the supply chains of capital, commodities, and human labour, which have often been neglected in the debate about how to democratise AI. This talk will illustrate how the AI industry and its suppliers, such as tantalum mineral extractivists, are exacerbating geographical asymmetries connected to contested struggles like ecocide. AI-based algorithms are rooted in a colonial legacy, and while their methods have evolved through innovation, similar oppressive mechanisms remain associated with this technology and its industry.
