The Internet, as we know it today, was built in part thanks to the development of open code, protocols, and infrastructures that allowed all the nodes of this network to communicate in an open and distributed manner. This necessary but not sufficient condition sustains the Internet today, even though many proprietary codes, closed protocols and highly centralized structures have been built on top of its foundations. Thinking about the sustainability of the Internet today implies facing the challenge of guaranteeing the free, open and democratic nature of the Internet and everything that is part of it. What is the importance of free software for a free Internet? How can these projects be sustained in the medium term? What role should public authorities play in the development of democratic technologies? Adriana Groh (Sovereign Tech Fund) will focus on addressing these questions.
