Propose new functionalities for Decidim software
#DecidimRoadmap Designing Decidim together
Registration form improvement with 2 steps + 1 onboarding screen
We’d like to improve the registration process for new users. The actual process is quite long and difficult, and we think Decidim should be more accessible and appealing.
Then, we propose that the registration form should be fragmented in two steps :
- The first one asking the user his email and password
- The second one his name, nickname and TOS & newsletter agreement
Furthermore, in order to encourage users to fill their profiles and improve the social network aspect of Decidim, we would like to add at the end of this process an interstitial screen.
It would offer the user the possibility to :
- Download his avatar picture
- Add his personal website and Bio
- Fill his interests
The user can skip this step or save those parameters.
Then, the user is redirected to the page he wanted to go (to create a proposal, the page of a proposal, create an initiative, etc.)
I linked a mockup of what this new registration process could be (sorry for the french).
Thank you for your thoughts!
This proposal has been accepted and is under development
- Has been reviewed by Decidim Product and complies with the Social Contract

Hi! I really like the idea. Just a couple comments:
* On Etape 1: it's really important that there's not data saved to the server on these steps, as we could be on direct violation to GDPR (saving personal data without user consent)
* Ecran d'onboard: right now most of the users don't know they can do that, so it's great to have it on the onboarding! I think ideally after this step we could ask for verification data, although as this depends on installations it's tricky to make something generic
Thank you for the answer Andrés !
You're right, we'll be careful with GDPR.
"after this step we could ask for verification data"
I would avoid asking for the verification data until the verification is actually required by the functionality. In my opinion, asking the verification data during the sign up process makes it more difficult.
In case it is required, I would at least make it configurable per organization whether the verification is emphasized during the sign up.

Hi! I also agree with the proposal. Just take into account what @andres says about GDPR.
Hi Carol! Thank you, we'll let you know how we'll be doing this.
Thanks!

These improvements definitely look great!
One thing that I would also like to point out during the registration process would be a kind notification about confirming the email address in case of a direct registration to the platform. Even when it is not required during the initial login (during the specified timeframe).
Our experience shows that people struggle to login to the platform afterwards when they haven't initially confirmed the email during the first time. The error messages they get in this case are not clear and they don't know what to do.
Hopefully our improvement efforts regarding this would help a bit (we added an automatic re-sending of the confirmation email), but it wouldn't hurt to mention about this during the sign up process itself.
Thank you Antti for your comment!
I completely agree with you, we'll definitely think about this problem when we'll start to develop this new registration process.
